Black River Forest
From the cooler highlands of Mauritius, 620 meters above sea level, this easy going hike offers startling views on the mountains and the canyon and takes you all the way down to the borders of the notorious Black River. Our experienced guide leads you through the lush vegetation and reveals the endemic plants and birds of Mauritius’s biggest natural park. Imagine yourself walking in the foot- steps of the early explorers through the forests of 17th and 18th century Mauritius.
The park houses all the major animal and bird species that are found in Mauritius. Spotting the gigantic fruit bats or elegant white-tailed tropicbirds (paille-en-queue) flying over the valley, is an enchanting experience. At the end of this walk, you have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing Black River!
