The Lion Mountain
The Lion Mountain dominates, like a natural sphinx, the region of the former Mauritian capital Mahébourg, overlooking the bay of Old Grand Port. If he could speak, he would tell all about the ancient naval battles between France and England that took place right at his feet. When going up, you follow the lion’s back and shoulders, and after a few scrambles over the rocks, you land on the flat area on his mane. This is the part with the most astonishing view on the islands scattered over the blue lagoon and the patchwork of green valleys surrounding the mountain. Listen to the sound of the waves brought in by the South-east trade wind! A big part of the Lion Mountain has a canopy of trees, which provides shade and coolness. Beautiful plants and flowers cover the stones like a natural carpet, enlivened by the sunrays beaming through the dense forest.
